Activities/Sweet Spoons

Sweet Spoons

Supplies: spoons, chocolate chips, microwave, bowl,
waxed paper plate or cookie sheet

Fancy gourmet stores sell packages of stirring spoons covered with chocolate. You stir your warm drink and let the softened chocolate melt into the drink or on your tongue. Instead of paying gourmet prices, make your own.
If you want to make a large number of sweet spoons, use plastic spoons and double the recipe. Otherwise, just lay out six to eight of your everyday spoons. Put spoons in the freezer for ten to fifteen minutes. Meanwhile, have an adult melt about one cup of chocolate chips in a bowl in the microwave for thirty to forty-five seconds. The chips retain their shape, so stir them to be sure they’re melted.
Gently dip the “bowl” of your spoon into the melted chocolate. Make sure there’s chocolate on both sides. (It’s tempting at this point to start licking the spoon right away!) Place the spoons on a plate or cookie sheet covered with waxed paper and refrigerate. After the chocolate has hardened, store it in plastic bags for the next time you want extra chocolate in warm milk or hot chocolate. You can also melt peanut butter chips or butterscotch chips for another type of sweet spoon.
