Watch adults in a grocery store. Their goal is to get in, load up the groceries, and get out as soon as possible. For children, an ordinary grocery store is filled with interesting sights and smells. Of course, it’s also filled with candy! Instead of racing through the store, take time to explore with your children. Try these ideas:
© Head toward the spice aisle and ask the children to look at the price-per-pound labels. They’ll be shocked to see saffron selling for $647 a pound. © Spend time in the fruit and vegetable section. Try to find a fruit you’ve never seen before. Buy it and do a taste-test at home. © Make a grocery list ahead of time. Give your children the Sunday newspaper coupons and ask them to find coupons for items you need. At the store, encourage your children to find the coupon item and split the savings with you. © Ask the manager for a behind-the-scenes visit. You might get to see doughnuts made or trucks delivering crates of watermelons. © Read labels on cans to find out where the food came from. Your children will be amazed that some canned peaches come from Madagascar. © Buy two similar items from different companies. Compare the two brands. Is the expensive roll of paper towels really more absorbent than the generic brand?
End the journey through the grocery store by giving each child a dollar to buy a special treat for themselves.
