Want to go up the rock-climbing wall? Sure, they’ll do it. On the other hand, ask an adult to try something new and they don’t want to get out of their comfort zone. Who, me? Join an aerobics class? No way! This activity requires parents to participate and set a good example. (You always set a good example, don’t you?) When the family is casually together, announce the new “Expand Your Horizons” program that is soon to begin. Assign every family member a specific week and write it on the calendar. During your assigned week, you must learn something new and share it with other family members. For example:
• Get a book on origami. Learn to make several paper sculptures and teach the family. • Find a new recipe and try it out on the family. • Teach the dog a new trick and share tips on dog training. • Ask the neighbor to show you how she grows such large tomatoes. Give a mini-gardening lesson. • Ask a dance teacher to show you some advanced steps. Practice with family members. • Learn to set up a super-easy family website. Share the results.
Sharing knowledge is a wonderful way to gain self-confidence. With everyone participating, your family will gain new skills and an awareness of each person’s capabilities. Even a kindergartner can show everyone the correct way to tie a shoe.
