Family Portraits

Your family may not be able to visit France to see the actual Mona Lisa, but you can still expose your children to the world of fine art. Simply set up an artist’s gallery in the comfort of your own home. The talent displayed will sur-pass any Rembrandt or van Gogh.
Transform a room into an art gallery with a few avantgarde touches. Put a sign on the door saying “Galleria of Exquisite Art.” Set out a variety of artistic supplies such as watercolors, markers, and good old crayons. If possible, borrow a few easels to complete the feel of a working gallery.
Assemble your family, otherwise known as the artists, in one room. Display and share a few books about drawing portraits. Don’t worry about giving a full art lesson. Just share two or three tips you gathered by skimming the books.
Write everyone’s name on a piece of paper and put them in a bag. Take turns reaching into the bag and selecting the name of a family member you will draw If Emily draws Sarah’s name, that means Emily situates herself so she can see Sarah. In the meantime, Sarah is sketching Mom, who is drawing Brandon. Encourage people to use a variety of mediums. Sketch the portrait with colored markers, and then fill in areas with watercolors. Make a border design with crayons.
After the drawing session, take turns admiring each other’s work. Display the family faces in a prominent location.
