If the queen of England gets a flag, why shouldn’t each of your family members have one also? With a few simple items, you can create a distinct flag to display on birthdays or special events. Make a family trip to the fabric store. Let each family member select a half-yard of his or her favorite color of rip- stop nylon. It’s available in a number of bright colors. The nylon lets you display the flag outdoors in all kinds of weather. Also buy a few quarter-yard strips of other assorted colors. When you get home, cut the half-yard sections into pieces about 12” x 18”. Lay a dowel along one of the shorter edges and fold the fabric over it. Sew or glue the fabric to itself, forming a casing for the flag. Remove the dowel while you finish decorating the flag. Let each family member decorate his or her flag. Using the remaining scraps of nylon, cut out shapes such as circles, flowers, or stars. Encourage children to decorate their flags according to their hobbies or interests. Attach the cutouts to the flag with fabric glue. Let the glue dry before waving the flags in the air. Slip a dowel back into the casing for your flagpole. When someone has a birthday or gets an A on their spelling test, display their flag for everyone to see. Make sure adults make a flag, also. That way, the next time you get a promotion, your flag will fly proudly in the front yard!
