Activities/The River

The River

Climb a hill to observe how a river flows: note the direc-tion, the current as the river widens and narrows, the land surrounding it, the riffles and curves. Observe what the river does to its banks by studying levees, trees and man-made protectors.
Walk along the bank and look for water and sand animals and plants, deadwood, erosion marks and tide marks. Watch for jumping fish. In the fall keep a lookout in the shallow waters near the banks for schools of baby fish migrating after spawning. Watch insects light on the water without breaking the surface tension.
Try to catch small river animals—crabs, polliwogs, crayfish, fish; fix a tub with river plants and water if possible and ex-periment with raising them. Feed them insects, bits of meat and lettuce, fish food.
If there is a waterfall, study what the force of the water is doing to the rocks above and below; discover why it is so powerful.
